I developed a custom iOS playback app, written in Swift, with the objective of ensuring seamless synchronization between the participant's location and the video content during the videowalk. The app's main function was to initiate video playback at precise moments, aligning with the participants' progress through the designated space, crucial for maintaining immersion and narrative cohesion.
Utilizing the synchronized internal clocks of the iPads, I avoided the complexities of networked device communication, which can be unreliable in dense indoor settings. This method guaranteed that each participant's experience began exactly on time, according to the planned schedule, without the need for manual synchronization. It is important to notice that the difference in accuracy was of about half a second, which is not good enough for audio synchronization. This factor had to be taken into account for settings where audio was playback both in headphones and in outside speakers.
The app was also utilized by "false performers" integrated into the videowalk. These performers, followed scripted routes and actions timed to intersect with participants. This arrangement ensured their movements to be synced with the narrative, blending scripted elements seamlessly with the live environment.
